The right burner for you.
Welcome to choosing the right burner "Blog",
This is to help you choose the right burner. Weather you are looking to do lots of burning or just a small hobby. You have a choice of two types of burners, Wire or solid nib. This should answer any questions you have about weather you have or are getting the right burner.
Wire or Solid nip burner:
Wire:
Wire nib burners are considered a professional burner. Due to there pen-like design, they are ability to create finer and more detailed works. With wire nibs, you have a much large range of nibs.
Pros:
- The nibs will heat up and cool down much quicker (Seconds rather than minutes)
- More accurate temp control, wire nip burners will have a finer temp selecting dial, compared most solid nip burner.
- A much quicker nib changing system. most will have screws that hold the nib, where solid nibs require you to take the pen apart to change the nib.
Cons:
- For a professional burner, they are very expensive.
- The nibs can be very fragile and brake easily, if not cared for.
- Not very easy to source wire nib burners.
Solid:
Solid nib burners are perfect for solid burns, not best for finer detail. Due to the cost, they are perfect for anyone looking to get into Pyrography. But not looking to spend too much.
Pros:
- Cheap to buy
- Nibs are very sturdy and hard to brake.
- Easy to source Solid nib burners.
Cons:
- Take a long time to heat and cool down the nibs.
- Due to the size of the nibs, it's a lot more difficult to do finer detail.
- Don't get a constant stream of heat, so have to keep stopping to let the nib heat up.
Blowtorch:
No, an essential. But for those looking to get the most out of burning. You may want to invest in a Blowtorch. I use it for smoothing and adding depth to larger areas of shading.
But it will primarily be use for burning dark/Blackout backgrounds. Instead of burning with a fine nib for hours, you can torch the large area in minutes. Plus it will be a smoother effect then burning into the wood with a nib.
